Among various concerns, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) stands out as a prevalent condition affecting Indians. A collaborative study by Country Delight and the Indian Dietetic Association, Mumbai, aimed at unravelling the digestive health of urban Indians, disclosed that a striking 70% of individuals grapple with digestive issues, with acidity topping the list. A parallel exploration conducted in four villages in Uttar Pradesh unveiled a GERD incidence of 10.7%.
In Varanasi, the HEAL Foundation conducted a media awareness event titled “Acidity – Karodon Logon Ki Problem Ke Safe Solutions”. This event brought together experts –Dr. Shivendra Singh, Professor and Head of Nephrology at IMS BHU, and Dr. Devesh Prakash Yadav, Associate Professor of Gastroenterology at IMS BHU to explore the genesis, impact, and viable solutions for acidity-related disorders.
Dr. Shivendra Singh, a distinguished Nephrologist, Professor & Head of the Department of Nephrology, IMS BHU, Varanasi, underlined, “The widespread nature of hyperacidity ailments affects 10-30% of the Indian populace, with Uttar Pradesh among the frontrunners of the prevalence rates. The role of dietary habits, sleep disturbances, and stress are key contributors. Alarmingly, one in every two sufferers either resorts to self-medication or utilizes over-the-counter remedies, emphasizing the importance of seeking professional guidance to avert complications.”
Dr. Singh further reiterated, “The significance of prudently approaching acidity management. The choice of medication is critical, as some may inhibit vital acid production, possibly leading to harm. For acid-related disorders, physicians may recommend medications like Ranitidine, a dependable over-the-counter solution boasting a reputable four-decade history.”
