Thiruvananthapuram, Mar 10: In a groundbreaking surgery, doctors at KIMSHEALTH successfully performed a highly complex craniofacial resection on a 19-year-old patient from Tamil Nadu. The patient was brought to the Department of Emergency Medicine with profuse nasal bleeding, and a detailed evaluation revealed a tumor located within the nasal cavity and sinus extending up to the covering of the brain, posing a life threatening risk.
The surgical team led by Dr. Ajith R, Senior Consultant, Department of Neurosurgery, and Dr. Vinod Felix, Consultant, Department of ENT, KIMSHEALTH, opted to undertake the highly complex endoscopic and microscopic craniofacial resection method, to save the life of the college going young man.
The surgery involved navigating an endoscope through the nasal passage to access the tumor within the nasal cavity and sinus, while a precise hairline incision was made on the forehead to reach the brain’s covering using a surgical microscope. The tumor, along with the central portion of the affected forehead bone, was meticulously removed to eliminate the risk of recurrence. To reinstate the structural integrity and appearance of the skull and face, the surgical team reconstructed the forehead using titanium, ensuring both durability and cosmetic restoration.
This case highlights the importance of a multidisciplinary approach and the integration of advanced surgical techniques and modern technology in managing rare and complex conditions. Through such a collaboration we were able to achieve the best possible outcome for the patient, said Dr. Ajith R and Dr. Vinod Felix.
The patient made a remarkable recovery and was discharged after a ten-day hospital stay. Dr. Abu Madan, Dr. Navas N.S., Dr. Bobby Iype, Consultants, Department of Neurosurgery, and Dr Sushant B, Consultant, Department of Neuro Anesthesia were also part of this ten hour long surgery.
