From Local to Global: Government Pushes Digital Commerce to Open New Markets for MSMEs

New Delhi, Aug 20: The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises has organised a national seminar at IIT Madras aimed at helping Indian MSMEs strengthen their export capabilities and use digital commerce to reach customers and markets across India and abroad.

The initiative focuses on helping small businesses understand how digital platforms can expand their market reach, improve business visibility and create new opportunities for exports. The seminar brought attention to the growing role of e-commerce and digital networks in helping MSMEs move beyond traditional markets.

Digital commerce can allow smaller enterprises, including manufacturers, artisans and emerging entrepreneurs, to showcase their products to a wider customer base without depending entirely on physical market networks. Better access to digital tools can also help businesses improve their competitiveness and connect with potential buyers in international markets.

The government’s efforts are part of a broader push to make India’s MSME sector more technology-driven, export-oriented and globally competitive. MSMEs are an important pillar of the Indian economy, contributing significantly to employment, manufacturing and exports.

The seminar also highlights the growing importance of platforms such as MSME Global Mart 2.0, a national digital commerce and trade facilitation platform designed to improve market access for small businesses.

By combining digital commerce, skills and market-linkage support, the initiative is expected to help more MSMEs identify new business opportunities, build stronger brands and participate in global value chains.

The government’s focus on digital market access reflects a wider effort to help Indian MSMEs transition from local businesses into competitive enterprises capable of serving national and international markets.
