KLEF Team Aprameya Among Top Winners in India’s Premier AI Hackathon

05th, August 2025: KL Deemed to be University (KLEF) is proud to announce that Team Aprameya, comprising talented students from the Vijayawada campus, has secured third place at the prestigious Urban Vision Hackathon 2025, organized by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru recently. The competition, focused on harnessing Artificial Intelligence for urban mobility solutions, witnessed participation from top institutions across India.

The hackathon commenced with a data annotation challenge, where teams were required to classify Bengaluru traffic images sourced from government CCTV footage. This phase aimed to support efforts in reducing traffic congestion and improving infrastructure. Team Aprameya’s innovative approach helped them secure 9th place in the national leaderboard, qualifying them for the final round among the top 20 teams invited to IISc for an intensive two-day in-person challenge.

In the final round, participants were tasked with developing an object detection model capable of identifying rare vehicle classes unique to Indian roads—such as LCVs, vans, and trucks—unlike global models which often overlook these. Team Aprameya trained advanced AI models including YOLOv8n and YOLOv8L, despite facing challenges such as limited server access. Thanks to the timely support of the faculty mentors gained access to additional computing resources, allowing them to complete model training effectively.

The team’s perseverance and technical excellence earned them the third prize along with a cash award of ₹25,000. Moreover, they have received interview opportunities with the research team at IISc and CapitalOne Bank, the official sponsor of the hackathon. These opportunities reflect the real-world impact and career potential of their work.

The winning team includes Singavarapu Sai Revanth (CSE-H, 3rd Year), Akula Venkata Praveen (ECS, 3rd Year), Atmakuri Komal Sai Raj (ECE, 3rd Year), and Kamsani Yashwanth Chowdary (ECE, 2nd Year). They were mentored by Prof. Hari Kiran Vege, Additional Dean – Academics, and Mr. Srikanth Annamareddy, Professor of Practice, KLEF.
