
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JUNE 14: HLL Lifecare Limited, a Mini Ratna PSU under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, marked World Blood Donor Day with a mega blood donation camp at its Akkulam manufacturing unit today. Held in association with the Blood Bank of Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, the initiative aimed to raise awareness about the significance of voluntary blood donation and ensure the availability of safe blood.
The camp, conducted at the ‘CHEERS’ Recreation Club Hall within the HLL Akkulam campus, was inaugurated by V. Kuttappan Pillai, Senior Vice President (Technical & Operations), HLL Lifecare. Dr. Sasikala, Head of the Department of Transfusion Medicine at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, led an informative session on the health and social aspects of blood donation. As part of HLL’s ongoing Diamond Jubilee, the event saw the participation of around 100 donors, including staff, stakeholders, and volunteers.
HLL’s commitment to safe blood collection is underscored by its significant manufacturing capabilities. With a production capacity of 1.25 crore (12.5 million) blood bags annually, the company leads the Indian market, holding a 35 percent share. Manufactured at its ISO-certified facility in Akkulam, HLL’s range of blood bag systems—including single, double, triple, and quadruple configurations—comply with international standards and are critical components in national health missions.
Further cementing its role, HLL is a key supplier to programmes such as the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) and the Kerala State AIDS Control Society (KSACS). The company also exports blood bags to over 25 countries, including Nigeria, Tanzania, and Nepal. Since the early 1990s, HLL has played a pivotal role in strengthening India’s blood transfusion services.
