Diwali, the illustrious festival of lights, is celebrated with exuberance throughout India, it simultaneously presents a significant risk of burn injuries, particularly among children and young adults. As we approach the festive season, it is imperative to address a concerning trend: the recent increase in accidental burn injuries.

The Imperative for Caution

Dr P.R.K. Prasad, a senior consultant and esteemed plastic surgeon at Apollo Hospitals, underscores the necessity of heightened awareness during this festive period. “Each year, we observe a substantial increase in burn cases during Diwali,” he remarks. “Most of these injuries are entirely preventable through adherence to simple precautions and the implementation of prompt first aid.”

To safeguard against potential hazards, the following precautionary measures are advised:

  1. Supervision of Minors: Children should never be left unattended with fireworks.
  2. Appropriate Attire: It is advisable to opt for cotton garments over synthetic fabrics, as the former are significantly less flammable. Ethnic attire, commonly donned during Diwali, is often loose-fitting and thus more susceptible to catching fire, exacerbating the associated risks.
  3. Designated Areas: Utilize open spaces that are distanced from flammable materials for lighting diyas and firecrackers.
  4. Responsible Disposal: Ensure that used firecrackers are soaked in water before disposal to mitigate the risk of accidental ignition.
  5.  First Aid Protocols for Burns-In the unfortunate event of a burn, immediate and appropriate first aid is paramount. Dr. Prasad recommends the following interventions:
  • Cool the burn under running water for no less than 15 minutes.
  • Remove tight jewelry or clothing from the affected area to prevent constriction.
  • Cover the burn with a sterile, non-stick bandage to protect the wound.
  • Refrain from applying home remedies, such as toothpaste or butter, as these can exacerbate the injury.

It is essential to seek medical assistance regardless of the burn’s severity, as prompt treatment can prevent secondary complications and infections. Immediate medical attention is particularly warranted in the following circumstances:

  • Chemical or electrical burns.
  • Burns affecting sensitive areas of the body.
  • Signs of infection, including heightened pain, redness, or fever.
  • Deep burns that appear pale or charred.

Demographic Vulnerabilities

Epidemiological data indicates that children and young adults aged 20-40 years constitute the most affected demographic. Conversely, older individuals, particularly those over 60, frequently sustain injuries while igniting diyas during prayers. This demographic is at heightened risk due to diminished reflexes and mobility, resulting in larger and more severe burn injuries.

The Risks of Improper Home Management

While the instinct to manage minor burns at home is understandable, the potential consequences of improper care can be significant. Inadequate cleaning , inadequate dressing and delayed professional assessment can lead to risk of complications such as hypertrophic scarring , contractures, irregular pigmentations, prolonged non healing wounds. While initial home management may seem adequate, it often falls short of addressing the underlying issues that can arise from improper care

The Golden Period: Understanding Its Significance

The golden period for burn management typically spans the first 24 to 72 hours after the injury. Burn injuries demand timely management and any delay may cause irreversible skin changes, increased burn depth and a host of avoidable complications. Early intervention not only helps in preserving skin integrity but also enhances overall recovery, significantly improving both physical and psychological well-being. Remember, when it comes to burns, timely action is essential for healing and quality of life.

The Aesthetic Imperative

In contemporary society, where individuals increasingly prioritize aesthetics, the importance of early management of burn injuries extends beyond immediate care; it significantly enhances the likelihood of achieving superior cosmetic outcomes.

The Role of Apollo Burn Care Unit

The Apollo Burn Care Unit is renowned for its expertise in managing burn injuries, including complex cases that other facilities may find challenging.
