The sector supports the livelihoods of nearly 30 million people, including around 10 million farmers, making its growth significant for rural communities across the country. India produced about 20.3 billion coconuts in 2024-25, reflecting the scale and importance of domestic cultivation.

The coconut economy is also changing rapidly as businesses move beyond the sale of fresh coconuts. Products such as coconut water, virgin coconut oil, coconut milk, desiccated coconut and activated carbon are creating new opportunities for processing, manufacturing and exports.

For farmers, the growing demand for value-added products can provide additional avenues to earn from their produce. For businesses, the expanding ecosystem is generating opportunities in processing, packaging, logistics, branding and international trade.

India’s coconut-product exports have also recorded strong growth, reflecting increasing demand for Indian products in overseas markets. Greater emphasis on processed and branded products could help the industry capture more value and strengthen India’s position in the global coconut trade.

The government is also focusing on improving productivity at the farm level through measures aimed at strengthening coconut cultivation and replacing ageing and unproductive trees with improved planting material.

Better cultivation practices, access to technology, irrigation and improved planting material can help farmers increase productivity while making plantations more resilient and economically sustainable.

The sector is creating opportunities beyond farming as well. Rural entrepreneurs can participate in coconut processing, food production, packaging, handicrafts, coir-related activities and other services linked to the industry. Such businesses can create employment closer to rural communities and provide additional income opportunities for families.

The expansion of the sector is also increasing the need for skilled workers in cultivation, harvesting, processing, packaging and related activities. Better training and technology can help modernise traditional practices and improve productivity across the value chain.

India’s large production base gives the country a strong foundation to compete in international markets. The next phase of growth will depend on improving product quality, modernising processing facilities, strengthening supply chains and developing brands capable of meeting global consumer demand.

For the millions of farmers and workers connected to the industry, the growth of the coconut economy represents an opportunity to move towards more stable incomes and better livelihoods.

With sustained investment in farming, processing, technology, skills and exports, India can build a stronger coconut value chain that benefits farmers, supports rural businesses, creates jobs and expands the country’s presence in global markets.
