India’s Green Infrastructure Drive Gets INR 1.86 Lakh Crore Push, Targets 135 GW Renewable Power

New Delhi, Sep 30: India is set to accelerate its clean-energy infrastructure expansion with the Union Cabinet approving a Rs 1.86 lakh crore Green Energy Corridor Phase-III (GEC-III) programme aimed at strengthening the power transmission network and facilitating the evacuation of up to 135 GW of renewable energy.

The large-scale initiative is expected to open new opportunities across power infrastructure, engineering, manufacturing, construction, energy storage and logistics, while creating the network required to support India’s growing renewable-energy ecosystem.

The programme is targeted for completion by FY 2032-33, marking a significant step in building infrastructure for India’s next phase of clean-energy expansion.

Major Infrastructure Investment

The total outlay of Rs 1,86,405 crore includes around Rs 1,36,378 crore for intra-state transmission systems and Rs 50,000 crore for 50 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

The investment will strengthen transmission infrastructure and improve the ability of the electricity grid to integrate power generated from renewable sources such as solar and wind.

Boost for Power and Manufacturing Sectors

The scale of the programme is expected to generate activity across a wide industrial ecosystem.

The development of transmission networks will create demand for transformers, cables, conductors, substations, electrical equipment and construction materials, supporting manufacturers and engineering companies.

Infrastructure contractors, logistics providers, installation agencies and project-management firms can also benefit from the pipeline of projects emerging under the programme.

Energy Storage Adds New Opportunities

The planned investment in 50 GWh of battery energy storage systems adds an important component to the country’s clean-energy infrastructure.

Large-scale storage can help improve grid flexibility and manage variations in renewable power generation. It can also support the growth of India’s battery, power-electronics, energy-management and related technology industries.

Wider Impact on the Economy

The infrastructure push is expected to have a wider economic impact through construction activity and demand for goods and services.

Projects of this scale can generate requirements for raw materials, machinery, transportation and professional services while supporting employment across different stages of project development.

At the same time, stronger transmission infrastructure can create better conditions for connecting future renewable-energy projects to the electricity grid.

Building New Foundations for Green Growth

The Green Energy Corridor Phase-III programme comes as India continues to expand renewable-energy generation and modernise its power infrastructure.

By combining transmission expansion with energy storage, the initiative seeks to strengthen the backbone required for integrating larger volumes of renewable electricity into the power system.

For businesses, the programme creates a long-term opportunity across infrastructure, clean energy, manufacturing, engineering, construction and technology, while supporting India’s broader transition towards a more renewable-based energy system.

The Rs 1.86 lakh crore investment thus places infrastructure development at the centre of India’s clean-energy expansion, with the potential to generate sustained economic activity through FY 2032-33.
