Toray Broadens Industrial Wastewater Treatment and Advanced Water Purification Lineup with Two New Nanofiltration Membrane Element Models

Tokyo, August 31, 2026: Toray Industries, Inc. has expanded its water treatment portfolio with the global launch of two new nanofiltration membrane element models, NE8040-XDM and NE8040-90F, aimed at industrial wastewater treatment and advanced water purification.

The company said both models were launched worldwide in July and are designed to deliver strong impurity removal performance along with high chemical durability. The products were developed and are manufactured by Toray Advanced Materials Korea Inc., with technical assistance from Toray’s Global Environment Research Laboratories contributing to the development of the NE8040-XDM.

The launch comes amid growing demand for technologies that can support sustainable water resources and comply with increasingly stringent environmental regulations. Nanofiltration membranes are being used in applications ranging from industrial wastewater reuse and valuable resource recovery to advanced water purification.

The NE8040-XDM has been developed specifically for demanding industrial wastewater applications. Toray said its proprietary durable structure provides up to five times greater chemical resistance and 10% higher divalent-ion separation performance compared with baseline offerings. The membrane is designed to maintain stable, long-term performance in industrial wastewater treatment as well as minimal liquid discharge (MLD) and zero liquid discharge (ZLD) systems.

The NE8040-90F, meanwhile, is a low-pressure membrane designed for advanced water purification. It combines high removal efficiency for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and other trace hazardous substances with high permeate flow, potentially helping operators improve water safety while reducing operating costs.

According to Toray’s product lineup, the NE8040-XDM is targeted at industrial wastewater treatment, MLD and ZLD systems, and valuable resource recovery. The NE8040-90F is intended for applications including water softening, hardness removal, reduction of total organic carbon and trihalomethanes, PFAS and organic matter removal, as well as food and beverage, municipal drinking water and water reuse applications.

Toray said it will continue to focus on market requirements, product performance and membrane technology development as it seeks to address water-related challenges and contribute to more efficient use of water resources and greater stability of water supplies worldwide.

The company, which marks its 100th anniversary in April 2026, has more than 300 affiliated companies and approximately 46,300 employees worldwide. Its business portfolio includes fibers and textiles, chemicals, films, electronics and information materials, carbon fiber composite materials, pharmaceuticals and medical products, and water treatment and environment-related businesses.
